Eleanor Jeanne (Onthank) Hamel, 98, died Sunday, April 26, 2020.  She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Francis Hamel for 68 years.

Born in Framingham,  she was the only child of William Henry and Margaret Eleanor (Thompson) Onthank.

In 1939 Eleanor graduated from the former Peters High School in Southborough as salutarian, where her mother was a French teacher.  She earned her B.S. in 1943, from Simmons College in Boston.

For the next two years she worked as a dining car hostess on the New York/New Haven railroad and lived in New York City.  On May 10, 1945 she married Charles ‘Fran’ and settled into Eleanor’s childhood home, the Onthank family homestead with Eleanor’s father, the Onthank patriarch, William, whose wife had died suddenly in 1939. Eleanor represented the eleventh generation of Onthanks living continuously in Southborough.

Eleanor was very active in the community as a Girl Scout leader, past treasurer of the Southborough Women’s Club, past Chairperson of the Southborough Garden Club, secretary of the Southborough Catholic Women’s Club, and active in the Marian High School Mother’s Guild all the while raising six children. She also worked as a medical secretary for Dr. Marilyn Meserve for many years.  Later in life, Eleanor opened Mapledale Antiques in a building on the home property. Both she and her husband were expert antiquarians and antique appraisers. With all this knowledge she became very active in the Southborough Historical Society, and volunteered her time well into her 80’s.

Eleanor leaves her six children, Carol Long and her husband Wayne of Southborough; William Hamel and his wife Kathleen of Bedford; Stephen Hamel and his wife, Carol of Falmouth; Christopher Hamel and his wife Jane of Southborough; Charles (Chuck) Hamel, Jr. of Wendell; David Hamel of Clearwater, FL, 12 grandchildren and step grandchildren ; their spouses; 16 great grandchildren and step grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her grandson, Nathan Long.
