What to do

Many people are unsure as to what steps need to be taken when a death occurs. Generally, the necessary steps depend on the situation. At Morris Funeral Home, we want you to be informed so that you can make the best decisions. Below, please find some information that we have found answers many of the questions that our families have.

Unanticipated Death at Home or Elsewhere

In this situation, you should immediately call 911. At that point, police and emergency medical personnel will then determine the appropriate course of action. Oftentimes, the police can arrange to have the human remains released directly to the funeral home so that preparations for services may begin. Once the body is released, usually by the medical examiner or the deceased's personal physician, you may then call Morris Funeral Home at (508) 485-4111. Occasionally, some bodies may be transported to the medical examiner's office; this is at the examiner's discretion. If the medical examiner is not available to transport the body, you may call the funeral home.

Anticipated Death at Home or Elsewhere

Today, more people with terminal illnesses are electing to die at home, generally under the care of Hospice. Simply notify Hospice that the Morris Funeral Home is your funeral home of choice; the hospice nurse will then make the necessary call to the funeral home, whatever time of day, and we will come as soon as possible (usually within 1 hour) to transport the deceased. The nurse will then handle the preliminary legal work. Quite often when someone has a terminal illness, the family will make pre-arrangements with the funeral home so that they are not overwhelmed with the many important decisions that have to be made at the time of death.

Death in an Institution

When death occurs in a hospital, nursing home, or other medical/care facility, you should notify the nursing/medical staff that the Morris Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. You may then call us at (508) 485-4111, or simply ask the staff to do it for you. All legal paperwork will be handled by the medical facility and/or the Morris Funeral Home.

Death out-of-state or Long Distances Away

Simply call the Morris Funeral Home at (508) 485-4111. We then coordinate with a local funeral director at the place of death. Our membership in several state and national organizations helps us to save you money when we make the arrangements.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us. We will be happy to assist and guide you in any way that we can. We may be reached at (508) 485-4111 or you may reach us via email at director@morrissouthboroughfuneral.com.
